Covering
This type of repair involves preventing the release of fibers by putting up a substance around or over the asbestos material. Protective jackets or wrap may be used to cover up insulated piping that is exposed.
Sealing
This method is also referred to as encapsulation. The method involves treating the asbestos with sealant to either join the fibers of the asbestos together or prevent release of the fibers by coating the material. Examples of items made of asbestos materials that may be repaired through sealing are furnace, pipe, and boiler insulation. It is advised that only highly skilled professionals should carry out this form of repair.
Regardless of the type of repair done, on thing is certain; the asbestos is kept in place. A lot of people undergo repairs on their asbestos rather than removal, due to the relatively lower cost. However, when repairs are carried out, future removal of asbestos becomes much more costly and tasking. Repairs range from minor to major. Both minor and major repairs should not be done except by professionals. Disturbed asbestos may release fibers which could pose serious danger; hence the need for professionals.
